Long-term composite repair solution for tank and pressure vessel reinforcement

Overview

The objective of the repair performed in December 2023 by 3X ENGINEERING (3X) distributor was to reinforce the bottom of a storage tank damaged by pitting corrosion and hole. The tank interior was repaired using our solution specifically dedicated to tank reinforcement, the REINFORCEKITⓇ PATCH.

Results

Due to severe cold weather conditions, heated habitat to allow proper curing was used. A curing time of 72 hours was necessary to obtain an optimal result. The bottom of the tank is now reinforced and its original integrity is restored for many years.

SCOPE OF WORK


The repair design was performed in compliance with API 653 and ASME PCC-2 standards. The tank suffered from pitting corrosion and hole measuring 30x40mm.

The tank reinforcement was performed following 3 main steps:

  1. Surface preparation and cleaning: The surface preparation was performed using Bristle Blaster machine to get a good surface roughness and thus ensure the bonding between the tank surface and the composite patching. Surface profile evaluation was performed to confirm the roughness was acceptable and superior to 60µm. Once the surface preparation was done, hygrometric conditions were checked and the defected area was cleaned with acetone.
  2. Filler and steel plate application: 3X filler was applied on the hole and sealed using steel plate covered with 3X specific filler. For pitting area, no steel plate was installed, only filler was necessay as first layer before composite patching.
  3. Composite patching reinforcement: For pitting corrosion defect, first layer of R3X70+ resin was applied over the defected area. Then 1st patch of Kevlar® tape (300x350mm) with R3X70+ resin was applied. Once the 1st patching was installed, second, third and fourth ones were applied in the same way. For hole, 4 layers (patch of 300x300mm) with R3X70+ resin were also necessary to repair the defected area.
