REINFORCEKiT® STRUCTURE, Dented riser – Asia
Composite solution for structural repair

Overview

The aim of the job, performed in November 2025 by 3X ENGINEERING (3X) local partner was to reinforce a riser that had suffered dent and corrosion damages due to boat impact. The reinforcement was designed using 3X composite solution REINFORCEKIT® STRUCTURE to restore structural integrity and enable the structure to withstand potential future impacts.

Results

The reinforcement work was successfully executed under offshore conditions despite a highly constrained operational window of approximately 2-3 hours per day. The offshore structure is now protected with REINFORCEKIT® STRUCTURE solution, providing long-term resistance against future impacts and corrosion, with a designed service life of 20 years.

SCOPE OF WORK

Following a deep Finite Element Analysis (FEA) aligned with the pile structural design, it was determined to apply 26 layers of REINFORCEKIT® STRUCTURE made of Kevlar® tape impregnated with 3X bi-component epoxy resin. Surface preparation was completed using Bristle Blaster® machine to achieve the required surface roughness (greater than 60µm Rz) and to ensure optimal adhesion between the steel structure and the composite solution. Hygrometric conditions were then checked and the prepared surface was cleaned prior to wrapping reinforcement.

  1. Filler application: The dented area was rebuilt using a specific filler to restore the initial geometry of the pile.
  2. First resin layer application: An initial layer of epoxy resin was applied to ensure the good impregnation of the first composite tape layer.
  3. Composite wrapping reinforcement: The dented area was reinforced by applying 26 composite layers over a total repair length of 1 meter. The remaining 4 meters of the pile were reinforced with 4 composite layers to ensure structural continuity.
  4. Repair finalisation: A protective topcoat was applied followed by the installation of an additional high-performance elastomer layer (HNBR) secured with smart ties to further enhance structural durability. Identification plate was installed to ensure full traceability.
