Online leak sealing solution for emergency pipe repair
Overview
The objective of this job, performed in May 2025 by 3X ENGINEERING (3X) local distributor was to seal online a leakage on 20" pipeline transporting naphtha with high pressure of 915psi. To quicky stop the leak, it was decided to use 3X emergency leak sealing system STOPKiT® and then secure it as long-term solution by overwrapping the STOPKiT® with the composite repair REINFORCEKiT® 4D (R4D) made of Kevlar® tape and epoxy resin.
Results
STOPKiT® and REINFORCEKiT 4D are versatile and effective solutions for handling emergency repairs in extreme conditions. No need to stop production (online repair systems). Short repair time and quick resolution, minimizing environmental impact and production loss. The leak has been successfully sealed, and the integrity of the pipeline has been fully restored.

SCOPE OF WORK
This emergency repair was performed following 2 main steps: ONLINE LEAK SEALING using STOPKiT® (STON020 reference specifically dedicated to onshore repair on 20" pipeline) and REINFORCEMENT AND REHABILITATION using REINFORCEKiT® 4D.
- STOPKiT® was installed in few minutes on the defect to stop the leak following 3X installation procedure.
- Surface preparation was then performed on both sides of the STOPKiT® to get a good surface roughness (superior to 60µm). Hygrometric conditions were checked and the surface was cleaned and degreased.
- 3X filler was used to level the surface and smooth irregular edges and geometries between the STOPKiT® and the pipe.
- REINFORCEKiT® 4D composite wrapping over the STOPKiT® was completed using 14 layers of Kevlar® tape impregnated with 3X resin.
- Final layer of 3X resin was applied on the whole repair to ensure good wetting and reference plate was finally installed for traceability purpose.
