REINFORCEKiT® 1D, External corrosion – Asia
High-performance composite repair solution for pipe reinforcement
Overview
The objective of the repairs, carried out by our local partner PETROENERTECH, was to reinforce 18 units of 900 mm (36″) conductors supporting a platform suffering from external corrosion. To restore the structural integrity of the platform and prevent further deterioration, it was decided to install our REINFORCEKiT® 1D system.
Results
This project was challenging due to bad weather and many COVID restrictions, but our local partner PETROENERTECH delivered an outstanding performance applying our REINFORCEKiT® 1D product.

Scope of work
According to the client’s requirements and superficial metal loss, it was decided to apply REINFORCEKiT® 1D. Two layers of composite were determined to reinforce each conductor over a height of 10 meters.
Surface preparation was completed with sandblasting to get a good surface roughness (superior to 60μm Rz) and ensure a good bonding between the steel pipe and the composite repair. Hygrometric conditions were checked, and the surface was cleaned with acetone.
The composite wrapping repairs were then completed following the below stages (the application procedure is the same for the 18 units to be reinforced):
-
Filler & primer application: F3X8 filler was used to reshape the conductor if necessary, followed by P3X1 primer application on the defected areas.
-
Composite wrapping: Once the “Touch Dry” state was reached, composite wrapping was completed by applying 2 layers of REINFORCEKiT® 1D over a 10-meter height. To do so, our water-activated composite system was unrolled while spraying water continuously.
-
Compression & finalization: Compression film was rolled all over the wrapping and slightly pierced using a perforating tool. Any trapped CO2 as bubbles could thus evacuate to avoid any further corrosion.
ADDITIONAL SCOPE (Appended straight line & bend repair text)
The composite wrapping repairs for this configuration were completed following the below stages (the application procedure is the same for the 3 areas to be reinforced):
- F3XS1 filler application on the defected areas (straight lines and bend) to reshape the pipe.
- One layer of R3X70+ resin application on the defected areas (same as above) to protect the prepared surfaces from corrosion.
- Composite wrapping was completed using Kevlar® tape impregnated with R3X70+ resin: 30 layers completed for a total repair length of 815 mm for the straight line above the bend / 36 layers for a total repair length of 874 mm for the bend / 48 layers for a total repair length of 703 mm for the straight line near the flange.
- Finishing stage ==> Last layer of R3X70+ resin applied all over the repair and an ID plate installed for traceability.
