REINFORCEKiT® 4D, Dent, gouges and leak – Europe
High-performance composite repair solution for pipe reinforcement

Overview

An onshore transfer 600 mm (24") pipeline was damaged by an excavator, which caused both one large dent and a leak. The pipeline reinforcement was performed in April 2014 by the 3X ENGINEERING (3X) team.

Results

On this special case, 3X ENGINEERING demonstrated once again its efficiency and competency in damaged pipeline repairs. Our on-site proactive support allowed a restarting of the pipeline without removing the damaged pipe.

Scope of work

The whole repair was done according to 3X finite elements analysis. The pipe was fully flooded with water. The leak sealing was done by using arc welding. Before composite wrapping, surface preparation was performed using sandblasting.

The wrapping process was then performed according to the 3 main steps described below:

  1. Filler application: F3X8 filler was applied at the welding area. The dent and its gouges were also filled in with this filler.

  2. Resin application: 3X resin was then applied on the entire prepared surface of the pipe.

  3. Composite wrapping: Kevlar® tape was impregnated with 3X resin and wrapped helically with a 50% tape overlap. Twenty (20) layers of composite were necessary to reinforce the pipeline.

A curing time of 72 hours was observed prior to the hydrotest at 10-bar pressure.
