REINFORCEKiT® 4D, Gas leak – Europe
High-performance composite repair solution for pipe reinforcement

Overview

In July 2025, 3X ENGINEERING (3X) specialists and partner were commissioned to secure an old gas leak repair on a 6 straight pipeline. The existing repair, previously carried out by another contractor, showed signs of external corrosion. The client requested 3X to reinforce the defected area and restore pipeline integrity. To achieve this, REINFORCEKIT® 4D (R4D) composite repair solution was applied.

Results

The implementation of R4D solution effectively restored the pipeline mechanical integrity and significantly extended its operational lifespan to 20 years. Thanks to the expertise and swift action of 3X team and its distributor, the repair was completed efficiently, delivering a robust and lasting solution complying with the standards.

SCOPE OF WORK

The existing repair had been recently carried out as a temporary reinforcement, without any calculations or compliance with applicable standards. The client called 3X and its partner to perform a long-term repair in full compliance with applicable standards. In accordance with ISO 24.817 standard, the repair procedure specified the application of 4 layers of R4D composite sytem (Kevlar® tape impregnated with a bi-component epoxy resin) to secure the previous repair. Hygrometry test was performed to control the humidity. Then the pipe surface was prepared using Bristle Blaster machine, achieving a cleanliness level equivalent to St3/SA 2.5 and a surface roughness of 76.2 (Rz), verified with a calibrated roughness tester. Finally, the surface was degreased with acetone prior to the composite application.

The composite reinforcement was completed following below stages:

  1. Resin application: A first layer of 3X bi-component epoxy resin was applied to provide strong adhesion between the pipe and the composite material.
  2. Composite wrapping: Four layers of R4D were wrapped around the defected area.
  3. Finalisation: A final layer of resin was applied to the repaired area, and an identification plate was installed to ensure full traceability. To enhance long-term protection, the application of UV-resistant coating was recommended to the client.
