REINFORCEKiT® 4D, Helical deformation – South America
High-performance composite repair solution for pipe reinforcement

Overview

In December 2024, 3X ENGINEERING (3X) local distributor repaired a 30" gas pipeline presenting an important helical deformation (blister-shaped). The repair was performed using 3X ultimate composite solution REINFORCEKIT® 4D (R4D) to restore structural integrity and ensure safe operation.

Results

Resin samples were taken during each step of the installation to ensure quality control. Hardness tests conducted upon completion validated the integrity of the repair. The repair is expected to provide a lifespan of 20 years, maintaining the pipeline's structural integrity and safe operation throughout this period.

SCOPE OF WORK

In accordance with ASME PCC-2 standard and 3X calculations, 10 layers of R4D were specified. The existing coating was removed by sandblasting, and the intervention area was clearly marked. A 5-meter-long section, centered on the identified defect, was thoroughly sandblasted to ensure proper surface preparation for the composite reinforcement application. Hygrometric conditions and surface roughness were verified and confirmed to meet the required specifications, permitting the continuation of the composite reinforcement process.

After surface cleaning, the composite reinforcement was performed as follows:

  1. Filler was applied to the defective area to level the surface and ensure effective composite bonding.
  2. A layer of 3X resin was applied to cover both the subsrate and the filler, followed by the application of the composite (Kevlar® tape + epoxy resin).
  3. The reinforcement installation work was carried out over two consecutive days.
    • On the first day, two layers of composite were applied.
    • On the second day, humidity and temperature conditions were reassessed before proceeding with the remaining planned layers.
In total, ten layers of Kevlar® tape, impregnated with 3X resin, were wrapped around the defect for a total repair length of 4000mm
      .
  4. A final resin layer was applied to finalize the repair and ID plate was installed for traceability.
